PESTLE Insights: Japan-Macroeconomic Outlook Report

 

Summary

 

Southern-Kanto Region, Kansai Region and Toukai Region are among the best performing regions in Japan. They contribute 60.9% to the GDP and account for 56.7% of the Japanese population as per the latest data available in OECD

As per the World Bank's logistics performance index (LPI), transport and logistic infrastructure in Japan improved in the last two years with an increase in rank from 12th in 2016 to fifth in 2018

Services sector is estimated to have contributed (69.6%) to the gross value added (GVA) in 2018, followed by mining, manufacturing and utilities (23.4%). In nominal terms, the two sectors are expected to grow by 3% and 1.8%, respectively in 2019.

The Nikkei 225 (^N225) exhibited a fluctuating trend during January 17, 2018 to January 17, 2019, reflecting uncertainty in the market. Overall, the index declined by 14.5% from 23,868.3 on January 17, 2018 to 20,402.3 on January 17, 2019

 

Scope

 

- Japan plans to spend JPY6.2 tn (USD 55 bn) on infrastructure to help double the number of tourists visiting the country (40 m by 2020), speed up construction of a magnetic levitation line and aid building projects overseas
